Dayanita Singh (b. 1961)

Dayanita Singh is an acclaimed Indian contemporary artist, photographer, and bookmaker. Singh is known for her work that spans photography, publishing, and the exploration of innovative exhibition formats. 

Singh's photography often captures poignant moments, offering insights into the complexities of human relationships and the everyday life of individuals. She is recognized for her ability to tell stories through her images and her use of black-and-white photography.

Bookmaking is central to Singh’s practice, and she often describes herself as a “book artist.” Dayanita’s books challenge traditional ideas of how books should be experienced. Her books include Privacy (2004), Chairs (2005), Go Away Closer (2007), Sent a Letter (2007), Dream Villa (2010), File Room (2013), Museum of Chance (2014), Museum Bhavan (2017) and Zakir Hussain Maquette (2019).
