Gulam Mohammed Sheikh (b. 1937)

Gulam Mohammed Sheikh remains one of India’s most important living artists of his generation. After studying at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Baroda, he traveled to London to continue his study of painting at the Royal College of Art. Upon returning to India, he took up a post teaching art history and painting at M. S. University in Baroda, where he served as guiding force in the rise of the school as a major center for the transformation of modern art in South Asia.

Gulam ‘s art often reflects a deep engagement with Indian culture, history, and mythology. Sheikh's artistic practice is characterized by a fusion of traditional and modern elements, employing a wide range of mediums such as painting, drawing, and printmaking. He has been a significant figure in the development of contemporary Indian art, addressing complex socio-political themes through his work.
