Jangarh Singh Shyam (1962-2001)

Jangarh Singh Shyam was a renowned Indian tribal artist, known for his contribution to the Gond tribal art form. He played a pivotal role in bringing Gond art to mainstream recognition after he himself gained international acclaim for his artistic talent after being shown in the iconic exhibition “'Magicians of the Earth'' at Centre Pompidou (Paris) in 1988. Unfortunately, his life was tragically cut short in 2001. Despite his untimely demise, Jangarh Singh Shyam's legacy continues, and Gond art remains a significant and celebrated form of tribal art in India. His family members, including his son Mayank Shyam, have also continued the artistic tradition and they are collectively referred to as the Jangarh Kalam School.

Jangarh Singh Shyam's unique style and use of bright colors helped distinguish his work. Jangarh explored diverse subjects in his short career but perhaps his most endearing works are his visions of nature’s mysterious beauty, which he often invested with anthropomorphic animals and birds.
