Jivya Soma Mashe (b. 1934)

Jivya Soma Mashe is an Indian artist known for his contribution to the Warli art form. Warli painting is a traditional tribal art form that originated in the Warli region of Maharashtra, India. Jivya Soma Mashe is often credited with taking Warli art from its traditional form and adapting it to contemporary artistic expressions.

Warli art typically features simple geometric shapes and depicts scenes of rural life, village activities, and rituals. The use of basic shapes like circles, triangles, and squares, along with a predominantly white color palette, is characteristic of Warli paintings.

Mashe represented Warli artists in the groundbreaking exhibition ''Magicians of the Earth'' at Centre Pompidou (Paris) in 1988. since then, Mashe's work has gained recognition both in India and internationally, and he is considered a master of Warli art. His innovative approach to the traditional art form has helped bring Warli painting to a wider audience and has influenced other artists to experiment with the style while preserving its cultural roots.
