Ram Singh Urveti (b. 1970)

Ram Singh Urveti is one of the influential contemporary Indian tribal art from the Gond tribe. His paintings celebrate the spirits of his tribe. Evanescent in nature, they belong to the spirit world. As with many tribal artists, the tree is omnipresent in his paintings. Ram Singh Urveti focuses his interest on the tree’s trunk in order to evoke serene power.

The Gond tribe has surprisingly close ties to Hindu culture, as intermarriage and assimilation occurred during the period in which they formed a kingdom in central India. It is therefore unsurprising that Gond art often portrays Hindu themes. Ram Singh Urveti incorporates Hindu deities in this work depicting a Gond tale about a woodpecker and an ironsmith.
