Shilpa Gupta (b. 1976)

Shilpa Gupta is a contemporary Indian artist known for her multidisciplinary approach, incorporating various mediums such as installation, video, photography, and interactive art. 
 
Gupta is recognized for her conceptual and socially engaged art practice. Gupta's work often explores themes related to identity, borders, censorship, and the intersection of the personal and political. Territorial borders and the unexplained disappearance of people in war are some of the themes that she incorporates into her work. Gupta's art often challenges viewers to reconsider preconceived notions and engage with the complexities of the world around them.
 
One of her notable works is "No Explosive in This". The series includes works produced across different mediums, including performance art and photography. The series began with a performance in which the artist asked 100 participants to carry bags and suitcases around the streets of London, covered with the words, THERE IS NO EXPLOSIVE IN THIS. In this work which illustrates everyday objects confiscated at airports, she addresses the climate of fear that is a part of life in many parts of the world due to threats of various kinds.
