Gifted to the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art (2019)

In 2019, most of The Gaur Collection of Photography was gifted to the National Asian Art Museum of the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., where they will complement large collections of photography from Japan and Iran, as well as the photographic estate of Indian photographer Raghubir Singh. The addition of the thirty-four works from The Gaur Collection, with works by seventeen artists from India and Pakistan, significantly expands the museum’s holdings of South Asian photography from the nineteenth century to the present.

In its introduction to the Gaur donation on its website, the museum states: “The subject matter and format of these photographs complement our archival collection of early Indian landscape and portrait photographs that circulated in popular ethnographic and tourist channels. With works dating from 1983 to 2013, the Gaur Collection not only documents South Asian contributions to the development of photography, but it also addresses critical issues affecting the broader global community.”

First exhibition based upon the Gaur Collection of Photography was presented in 2022-23 at the National Asian Art Museum.  A second exhibition is being planned for 2024-25
