Madhvi Parekh (b. 1942)

Madhvi Parekh is known for her vibrant and distinctive style of painting characterized by its use of bold colors, intricate patterns, and a unique blend of folk and contemporary elements.

In 1957, at the age of fifteen, she married Manu Parekh, an Indian artist who inspired her to take up art. Madhvi Parekh started painting by depicting memories of her childhood and fantasy. She gradually moved towards painting in traditional folk style. Although her inspirations are traditional, her style is contemporary as she was greatly influenced by Paul Klee. Although her paintings represent folk art, but she does not draw from any one specific folk tradition. Her art reflects a deep connection to her cultural heritage, and she often explores themes related to identity, womanhood, and spirituality.

Parekh has developed a visual language that is both rooted in tradition and speaks to contemporary concerns. Her paintings are vivid and surreal incorporating themes from mythology, daily life, and nature.
